Nigel Milsom, Judo house part 5 (faith, hope and luck),
2013, oil on linen, 230.00 x 195.00 cm, TCG22088
collection: Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney
'Judo house part 5 (faith, hope and luck)' 2013 was painted when Nigel Milsom relocated from Sydney to Newcastle, NSW, in 2013. Milsom had been bailed out by the barrister Charles Waterstreet following his arrest for armed robbery and was facing a likely prison term of six years. From these events transpired a personal series of abstracted images of industrial lights and architecture found in and around Milsom's hometown of Newcastle. In this work, a warm dawning sun casts a hard and soft edged silhouette of a skeletal steel structure loosely based on a bridge located between Sydney and Newcastle. The title 'faith, hope and luck’ is somewhat optimistic and reflects the artist's trust in fate during this troubled period in his life.
