Archie Moore, Possession, 2026, 24 carat gold, framed, sheet, Edition 10 + 2AP + 2PP, TCG023878

Possession relates to Archie Moore’s multi-part portrait of his father, Stanley Moore (1908–1994), Remnants of My Father, first exhibited in the 2026 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art. The portrait is rendered in gold and reflects Stanley’s long-standing preoccupation with gold through objects and documents from his deceased estate, as well as attributes Archie associates with him.

Possession, a facsimile of Stanley’s mineral exploration licence, unravels the ‘quiet desperation’ that sustained his belief in the possibility of escaping poverty for himself and his family by digging up gold. Archie’s father, of English and Scottish ancestry, was convinced that gold lay beneath the parcel of Kamilaroi land — the traditional Country of Archie’s maternal grandmother — that Stanley’s father won in a land ballot in 1900. Possession manifests Stanley's aspirations half a century later.

Archie worked with the Australian precious metals group Pallion to realise the portrait.
