It is with delight that The Commercial presents LIGHTMOVING, a group exhibition including works by Mitch Cairns, Jazz Money and Augusta Vinall Richardson. The gallery would like to express a particularly warm welcome to Jazz and Augusta who are exhibiting with the gallery for the first time.

Mitch Cairns has developed a new series of paintings that began with Coloured Glass (for Roland) exhibited earlier this year in the Adelaide Biennial, now in the collection of the Art Gallery of South Australia. These works are modelled on a cellophane and cardboard collage ‘activity’ brought home by the artist’s pre-school son and imported, with permissions, to the studio as a study in the poetry and physics of light and colour via variations within a series. Cairns was the judge of the 2022 Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship.

Augusta Vinall Richardson works with sheet and cast metals in the production of abstract sculpture. Objects in the exhibition are suspended, free-standing and wall-based in stainless steel, aluminium and bronze. Her sketched templates, cardboard and tape constructions and papier-mâché moulds are palpable in finished metal forms and surfaces, expressive of the intelligence of irregularities. An ongoing dialogue unfolds between ephemera and permanence of materials and process. Vinall Richardson has exhibited widely in commercial and artist-run-initiatives. She was recently awarded a Master of Fine Art by Monash University.

Jazz Money’s words are pressed into mould made paper with hand torn edges. The Wiradjuri artist/poet’s first series of editioned prints is a poem in seven parts. Inkless and refusing capitalisation, she points beyond the captains of written language to an older tongue. Quiet intonation is carried by the substrate of paper providing an aperture to atmospheres and pleasures of the phenomenal, mortal world. Money is exhibiting concurrently in Primavera 2022: Young Australian Artists at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, their first book of poetry, how to make a basket, published by University of Queensland Press in 2021 was awarded the David Unaipon Award for First Nations writers.
