The Commercial is thrilled to present a solo exhibition by Angela Brennan at Sydney Contemporary 2025. Over four decades, Brennan’s practice is an ongoing thesis on colour, pleasure and relationships of form. Her work returns us to the exhilaration of experiencing art—and of being in the world. Congratulations to Angela Brennan, Mitch Cairns and Jude Rae, announced as finalists in the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Angela is in Archibald with a portrait of Bridget Brennan, award-winning Indigenous journalist and the artist's niece. Mitch is in the Archibald with a portrait of fellow artist, Stephen Ralph, an in the Sulman with a mixed media text piece. Angela Brennan and Mitch Cairns feature in Eye to Eye: The Susan Taylor and Peter Jones Collection at Drill Hall Gallery, Canberra. This significant private collection "was seeded from an initial interest in mid-century modern design and early twentieth century avant-gardes, blossoming into an embrace of non-objective and abstract art. Yet their collection has grown to revel in the intersections between conceptual art, geometric abstraction, seriality, non-objective painting, photography, contemporary jewellery and poetics to develop conjunctions across time, place and materiality." Seminal work by Angela Brennan is included in Gertrude Contemporary’s landmark exhibition. Reflecting on 40 years of Melbourne’s critical contemporary art space, A Fictional Retrospective: Gertrude's First Decade 1985-1995 ‘takes a speculative look at the span of artists’ work shown during Gertrude Contemporary’s formative years, to shape a fresh and vital interpretation of this era’, curated by Sue Cramer and Emma Nixon. Announced as part of the Museum of Contemporary Art's 2025 program, Angela Brennan and Jude Rae will be exhibiting in The Intelligence of Painting, an exhibition of 14 contemporary Australian women painters at the MCA. Curated by MCA Director, Suzanne Cotter, and Curator, Manya Sellers, The Intelligence of Painting, ‘throws a spotlight on the energy of contemporary painting in Australia today’.
