Working from her industrial metal studio in inner-city Melbourne, Augusta Vinall Richardson produces abstract composite sculptures in sheet and cast metals. Each component retains its own formal integrity while functioning as part of a larger modular assemblage. Her process typically begins with drawings or full-scale maquettes constructed from cardboard, paper and tape, which facilitate three-dimensional thinking around form, structure and surface, resulting in works characterised by organic idiosyncrasy. Vinall Richardson’s practice is underpinned by an ethic of responsibility toward materials and objects. Her abstract forms may be read as analogues for social structures, in which multiple discrete elements are brought into relation to form a cohesive whole. While her work engages with minimalist traditions, it departs from their reductive tendencies through an emphasis on irregularity, texture and the handmade. Metal is central to her practice, providing both material resilience and a natural affinity with outdoor contexts and the public realm.
Vinall Richardson presented a solo exhibition at Gertrude Contemporary, Melbourne (2026), and in 2025 was selected for Primavera 2025: Young Australian Artists, curated by Tim Riley Walsh, at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. She has completed and is currently working on a number of public art commissions.
In 2022, Vinall Richardson was awarded a Master of Fine Art by Monash University. As part of her undergraduate studies at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, she undertook an exchange semester at Gerrit Reitveld Academie in Amsterdam. Her early academic work was in textile design.
